Nadine Flagel

Nadine Flagel has engaged with reused text(ile)s in literature and textile art throughout her life. Early rugs reflect Art Nouveau influence and a commitment to sustainability. During parental leave from teaching English literature and composition at university, Flagel developed her original art practice and sensibility, an adaptation of Arts and Crafts movement to the colours, textures, and materials of the Pacific Northwest. Recent works negotiate between urban precarity, architecture, and art.

Flagel has also organized a group exhibition of original hooked rugs in East Vancouver and received two City of Vancouver grants to make art with youth. With a partner, Flagel recently completed a permanent artwork for Richmond, BC. Her publications and ongoing research reflect thoughtfully on craft, design, and art. She teaches at Maiwa School of Textiles and is a member of the Vancouver Guild of Fibre Artists, CARFAC, and the Craft Council of British Columbia.
